Have I Broken Up with Twitter?

I’m having a heckuva hard time “remembering” to get on Twitter anymore.  I wonder if I’m the only one.

And even when I do get on and yell into the canyon a bit, I hear nothing back.  No echoes, no responses.  Just crickets.  If I was the kind of person with a complex, it would give me a complex.

I have no trouble getting on Facebook.  And I get lots and lots and lots of affirmation from the things I put on Facebook.

But Twitter?  It’s a little “meh” for me right now.

I wonder if when I FINALLY get an iPhone (this month!  this month!) I’ll get on it more.

Is there anything you’ve had trouble getting around to this Fall?

I would love to have trouble getting around to laundry and dishes, but these darned family members of mine seem to think they need those things.

You know who I always like getting around to in the blogging world?  Gigi at Kludgy Mom.  She does an “Around the Bonfire” series each  Wednesday where she invites guests to tell a story.

You should check it out sometime.  Good stuff.

  1. I have seen a difference too.

  2. I’m with you! Definitely having trouble remembering twitter – and my blog – and everything else :) It’s my busiest time of year at work, and it makes it so much harder to squeeze in anything else! But I’m happy to check in here with you :) And I was very excited to actually be guest posting on Gigi’s blog last week!

  3. I know just what you mean. Then again I just found your post via Twitter so maybe there’s still something there? :)

I’m not on Facebook so I can’t compare, but I remember when I first started Twitter and having fun and interesting conversations with lots of different people. These days? Not so much. Thanks for the reminder today to improve my own engagement and see if that helps at all.

  4. I think we go through phases with various social media. It’s hard to keep up with them all so I think we cycle through them depending on where we are getting more feedback.

  5. Yes! Something is up with twitter lately.
But then again…I came here from twitter..

  6. I feel the same way about Twitter . That said, I did come in to see your blog based on your Twitter comment. I click and follow folks from Twitter to their blogs, but I’m not getting the same love back. Makes me thinks I’m boring. Or something.

  7. I feel the same way about twitter. I forget about it all the time, and when I remember, I don’t have anything good to say anyway. And if it happens that I ever do have something decent to say, I hear crickets. Someday I’ll get the hang of this twitter stuff.

  8. I rarely tweet. It’s not much my thing. But I have my blog set to push posts out as tweets, and I welcome new followers to the Jester’s Court. And sometimes I’ll attend a twitter party for something specific.

  9. Attempting to keep all those plates spinning in the air takes a lot of time: Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, Commenting, Guest Posting, keeping up on the “tech how to’s of blogging” and learning new marketing. Whew! I drop plates on a regular basis.

One tool I use is Hootsuite. If I can’t be actually on the media, I can at least schedule FB and Twitter posts in advance.

  10. I feel the same way… but I check every day just to see what’s new. Sometimes people respond and other days… nothing. I like FB but I hate that I’m missing half of what people post or they miss what I post because of the changes.

  11. Funny you should write about this, because I recently “broke up with” Twitter, too. I mean, really: I cancelled my account! I just felt like Twitter was a lot of self-promotion, without much dialogue or interaction, which just bores me. I’m putting my efforts into Facebook now, and that seems like a more valuable strategy for me, personally.

  12. Hope you do score that iPhone! And Twitter? I only pretend to be on there sometimes b/c I feel like I have to. I don’t get it, and I’ve never liked it!

  13. I’m not all that crazy about twitter. I just joined becuse it seemed like a requirement if you are a blogger. But I hear crickets when I tweet, too. I like Facebook a lot better. Maybe all of us who hear crickets should agree to tweet back to each other.

  14. It is a feast and famine kind of thing! iPhone will help or hurt you – depending on how much time you want to spend on Twitter! :) If I see ya there, I will blab with you! xoxo

  15. Twitter has definitely gotten very meh. I’ve read they are using the same Edgerank system as Facebook so it makes me wonder if anyone ever really sees anything I post and what am I missing that I would like to see. I really wish these social media sites would quit assuming they know what we want.

  16. I feel the same way about Twitter. It’s harder than Facebook for me because if you’re not on Twitter when something is posted, you miss it. Facebook offers you different ways to organize what’s in your newsfeed anad it send you notifications, so I feel like I catch most of the “important” stuff. :) Twitter just happens too fast for me. I’m old. :)

  17. I’ve never been that much into Twitter. I found it hard to converse on, esp. if you have a lot of people you follow, when you open up your feed you’re bound to have missed something/someone. But saying that, I go in spurts on it.

  18. I am newer to Twitter – I only got on in May – but I am already on it less and less. I am going to have to make sure I “Like” Literal Mom on Facebook – because I am much better at keeping up over there!

  19. ah twitter….the one thing I still like about twitter compared to fb is that I can organize my lists and filter out all the noise—but even then, it still is a lot of noise.

  20. I still use Twitter but I’m probably on Facebook more.

  21. Work has really, really ramped up for me lately — and that’s been cutting into my blogging time, and my twitter time. But, I’m far from having broken up with either . . . maybe it’s because I still have my sunday morning gimmick or because I have an army of people that I’ve met in real life that share a similar schedule with me, so Twitter becomes a mass-texting tool, if nothing else.

Or maybe it’s because I always want to be drinking and spending lots of time on Twitter leaves me a little bit drunk….

  22. I have never used Twitter all that much. But I must add that I consider it to be a little ‘venting’ playground: a lot of co-workers follow me on Facebook, but none of them on Twitter…

  23. You are not alone. I enjoy Twitter but forget to get on and often lose time without getting any real value. I will make sure I’ve “liked” you on Facebook – can’t get enough Literal Mom. I also love Gigi at Kludgy Mom – good taste!

  24. This is too weird… I was thinking about writing a post on this very same thing! I am most definitely not feeling the Twitter love. It drives me crazy, actually, for I feel no matter how many people I interact with, I don’t get much in return – so I really am starting to get a complex (well, even more of a complex ;) ) Much like you, I do however get much more enjoyment out of Facebook. Thanks for making me feel not so alone!

  25. Having an iPhone definitely helps with push notifications.

That said, I still keep myself on a strict Twitter diet.

I still like to have real-life friendships and my family kind of likes it when I talk to them.

    I think.

I found you from Gigi. I posted for her this summer. I wrote about how my first real boyfriend tried to convince me to give him a blowjob.

You wrote a great piece at Gigi’s place. She’s got a great little series running there. Nice to meet you. Here. Again.

  26. I don’t think I would ever get on twitter if I didn’t have tweetdeck. But it’s organized so smartly with all the tweets, and then the mentions and the Direct Messages and the searches according to column. And it sends tweets out with little tweety sounds as pop-ups that flash and disappear. Twitter is pretty much here to stay for me. :-)

  27. I love Twitter but like you it seems that on Facebook there’s more of a give and take. It’s easier to engage in some ways. I use Facebook a lot more that Twitter. I use Tweetdeck as well and that does make it easier to stay on top because you see the messages as they pop up!

  28. Totally agree about the twitter thing! It just isn’t doing it for me anymore. I love it for finding out news on football games, things like that– but just for interacting now I just don’t really like it anymore.

  29. So – I NEVER use Twitter for anything other than sharing stuff I like from my favorite bloggers and sharing my stuff…and all of this is truly a half-assed effort. BUT – I started a feed (@theadjunctvoice) for some ‘stuff’ I do with higher ed and it has actually be fairly productive. I think that there are just so many “I follow you-you follow me” back rubbing, we don’t have targeted audiences getting our feeds like once upon a time, you know, when people had conversations. Maybe our Twitter Audience Eyes were too big for true Twitter Interactions.
